Sunday, August 9, 2015 through Friday, August 14, 2015. Lolita is the third novel written in English by Russian Vladimir Nabokov. The history of Lolita's interpretation is a study in sharp contrasts. It has been dismissed as morally outrageous and praised as profoundly ethical. It has been lionized as a perfect model of postmodern irony, or as the epitome of humanistic engagement. We will read Lolita savoring the details, while also noting the rich dialogue that Nabokov carries on with his Russian literary heritage. Instructor: Peter Thomas $805 double; $1,075 single; $395 commuter. Bjorklunden's magnificent lodge, just south of Baileys Harbor, WI, 7590 Boynton Lane, Bailey's Harbor, Door County.  Bizarrchaeology: The Weird Side of World Prehistory
Sunday, August 30, 2015 through Friday, September 4, 2015. Public interest in archaeology seems to focus on "mysteries" of the past or "unexplainable" phenomena. Since the past is largely impossible to know, there is a tendency to fill it with products of the imagination rather than products of the peoples of the past. This course will examine some of these "imaginary" pasts-a practice coined "bizarrchaeology" and will consider the cultural contexts in which bizarrchaeology works and the motivations of its practitioners.
