How has the museum acquired almost 10,000 works and built the largest collection of contemporary craft in America? What kind of life have these images and objects lived before coming to RAM? Chosen based on the interesting stories they can tell about artists, donors, care and conservation, or acquisition, these works also showcase the growth of a major museum collection over 75 years.  Paul Smith: Masters of Craft
Sunday, September 17, 2017 through Sunday, January 7, 2018. This exhibition offers an intimate look at major figures in contemporary craft. For over thirty years, Paul J. Smith, Director Emeritus of the Museum of Arts and Design, took casual portraits of artists as he encountered them in various settings including in their studios. With an atypical twist of having the emphasis on the artist directly and not the work itself, these photographs reflect the personalities and individuality of makers who shaped the field in the twentieth century.  Variations on a Theme: Vessels from RAM's Collection
Sunday, July 16, 2017 through Monday, January 22, 2018. The second in a series of exhibitions surveying the landscape of craft through theory, design, and history. The 50 plus examples on display in this exhibition-made of clay, glass, and metal and pulled from RAM's extensive holdings of contemporary craft-underscore the idea that there are many ways to interpret or investigate what a vessel could or should look like. Includes the work of artists such as Ralph Bacerra, Kim Cridler, Ruth Duckworth, Gustavo Perez, Ann Wolff, and Betty Woodman. Racine Art Museum, 441 Main Street, Racine, Racine County.  Karen Johnson Boyd: From the Vault
Friday, August 4, 2017 through Friday, July 27, 2018. Karen Johnson Boyd was an advocate for and collector of art who had a strong affinity for contemporary American craft. This Windows on 5th installation pays homage to her role in establishing RAM's craft collection by featuring large-scale ceramic work that she donated to the museum over the years. With works presented as if being pulled from crates or out of storage, this exhibition offers a playful take on building a collection, honoring a donor, and managing works of art.  Souvenir
Friday, September 8, 2017 through Monday, November 5, 2018. 7:30 pm. Eccentric Manhattan socialite Florence Foster Jenkins once declared, "people may say I can't sing, but no one ever said I didn't sing." And, oh, did she sing - often and loudly, but rarely on key. Her recitals brought her a legion of die-hard fans, and she capped her improbable career with a Carnegie Hall concert that famously sold out in two hours. Souvenir is a charming and hilarious musical comedy that reminds us that can achieve anything when you set your mind to it.
