Biofuel Conversion Process Biomass-derived carbohydrates, such as fructose, are converted over a catalyst into HMF in a two-phase reactor consisting of a reactive aqueous phase (containing fructose and the catalyst) and an organic phase (into which the HMF is extracted). Once made, HMF can be converted into recycleable plastics or diesel fuel. Image credit: James Dumesic |
