Biofuel Conversion Process
Biomass-derived carbohydrates, such as fructose, are converted over a catalyst into HMF in a two-phase reactor consisting of a reactive aqueous phase (containing fructose and the catalyst) and an organic phase (into which the HMF is extracted). Once made, HMF can be converted into recycleable plastics or diesel fuel.
