This is a birefringence image of human embryonic stem cell (hESC) colonies cultured on a liquid crystal substrate. Wells of a gold grid were filled with liquid crystal and then hESC colonies cultured for 1 day. The colored areas represent regions of the substrate where hESCs are attached and the black regions lack hESCs.
