major public transportation
- Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS)
- Nearly all of Milwaukee County can be reached through the public transportation grid. More than 85 percent of all county residents live within walking distance of a bus route. MCTS delivers about 190,000 bus rides per day! Public transit is essential to preserving area green space. Most cars on Milwaukee-area roads are single-occupant vehicles (SOVs) with an average occupany of 1.12 people per car. One MCTS bus can take more than 40 SOVs off the road, eliminating 90 percent of pollutants emitted by the SOVs and reducing the need to develop land for road and parking lot expansion. MCTS provides wheelchair lifts on some buses, express service and special passes and tickets. Fare is under $1.50. Get a map call 414-344-6711! MCTS also runs The Milwaukee Loop. Called the "Downtown Line," Milwaukee's faux trolley runs from May to September and reaches most of the downtown area museums, riverwalk, restaurants and shops. Ride all day for $1.
