Menomonee River Watershed
Especially prone to flooding, much of the Menomonee River has been routed through concrete channels and has been heavily used by industry.
This watershed covers 136 square miles and is home to more than 336,670 people. Efforts are underway to return the Menomonee River to swimmable and fishable conditions. In 1996, one million dollars was awarded through Federal Grants to remove a section of concrete spillway to restore fish migration upriver. River cleanups occur annually and monitoring is continuing.
Friends of Menomonee River
Further downstream, in the Menomonee River Valley, work is proceeded to complete the Hank Aaron State Trail which will link the lakefront with county and city lands near the western edge of Milwaukee County. Eventually these trails should join other trails in the area joining it to a statewide network of biking trails.
